AT&T Admits to Sharing Customer Details in New Privacy Policy

26/06/2006

AT&T Inc. sharply altered its privacy policy last week, claiming that it owns the phone records of customers, and is free to hand them over to government officials without reservation.

The revised privacy policy describes the personally information of subscribers as “business records that are owned by AT&T. As such, AT&T may disclose such records to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process.”

Probably realizing that it is futile to deny involvement in the American government`s illegal wiretapping program, the telecom giant is now trying to take a different approach to its problems by effectively stating that it has the legal right to blatantly stomp upon the rights of its own customers.

We are not changing how we treat customer information, said company spokesman, Michael Coe, in a sad admission that the company has in fact never cared about the user`s right to privacy. We updated our policy to make the language clearer and easier for our customers to understand.

One benefit of AT&T`s new policy is that each and every customer must read and agree to it, which was surprisingly not a requirement under the old system.

Hopefully, this will increase awareness among users that their service provider has little or no respect for their rights. Only once customers understand and oppose that simple fact will AT&T begin to think about trying to rectify its appalling privacy record.
