FCC to Fight Unauthorized “Pretexting” with New Privacy Rules11/01/2007
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is expected to implement a new set of nationwide rules in the coming weeks, which will better protect personal phone records from unauthorized data mining or pretexting. FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin, is reportedly supporting a proposal that will force telephone carriers to tighten up the procedure used to access call records. Customers would need to provide a special password before accessing personal records online or over the phone. Those without a password could have the information sent to their home address, or have the phone company call them back on their landline or mobile phone of record. The majority of FCC commissioners have voiced support for the new rules, according to officials with the regulatory agency, but some specific details may be modified before the proposal is passed.
