The residential VoIP market will swell from its current customer base of 38 million to reach more than 267 million households in 2012, according to a report by ABI Research.
ABI broadband analyst, Michael Arden, noted that the digital phone offerings of established cable and broadband providers will really push VoIP into the future, putting increased competitive pressure on landline telephone incumbents.
U.S. cable leader, Comcast, is already living proof of this trend, having added 1.5 million digital voice subscribers in 2006, compared to just 290,000 in the previous year. Fixed-line incumbent, Verizon Communications, meanwhile, whose service area overlaps that of Comcast, lost more than 500,000 telephone customers over the course of last year.
