Judge Puts Hold on Sprint Spying Lawsuit

U.S. District Court Judge, Vaughn Walker, has ordered a temporary hold on legal proceedings against Sprint Nextel for its cooperation with the National Security Agency’s illegal wiretapping program. Walker says that the lawsuit will remain on hold until the appeal of Hepting v. AT&T — a similar lawsuit brought by the Electronic Frontier Foundation against Sprint rival, AT&T — has been reviewed. The order, which covers Sprint Nextel, Sprint Communications, Sprint Spectrum, and Nextel West, establishes a precedent that pins the hopes of all privacy advocates on the Hepting lawsuit, which the U.S. government has vigorously (but unsuccessfully) attempted to squash.
