MTS Allstream Applies for Local Phone Deregulation in Winnipeg, Manitoba

09/05/2007

Manitoba telecom incumbent, MTS Allstream, has applied to Canada’s national telecom regulator to deregulate the pricing of local telephone services within the Winnipeg area.

The company said in its application to the CRTC that the deregulation or forbearance process would be supported by stiff competition and robust market conditions.

“The competitive landscape in Winnipeg’s telecom market is robust and well-established,” commented MTS Allstream’s chief regulatory officer, Chris Peirce, in a statement. “Forbearance will bring the full benefits of a competitive market to our customers.”

Price deregulation in the local phone sector was made possible by a regulatory change last month, allowing carriers to apply for forbearance in markets where at least three carriers are in operation. Canada’s two largest telephone providers, Bell and Telus, began applying for deregulation almost immediately after the change took effect.
