Verizon to Offer Quadruple-Play Telecom Services

21/05/2007

Verizon Communications announced plans last week to offer quadruple play telecom services that is voice, broadband, internet, and wireless in a single package.

“The quadruple play is something we’re planning to offer later this year. You’ll see that roll out where we do have a contiguous wireline and wireless footprint,” said Verizon’s Chief Operating Officer, Denny Stigl, at the recent Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.

Verizon is currently the second largest incumbent telephone operator in the United States, and is building a fiber optic broadband and television network throughout its service territory. The company’s fiber optic services will be available to a total of 9 million households by the end of this year.

Verizon also provides cell phone service throughout America, in a 60/40 partnership with UK-based Vodafone Group.

By offering all four services under a single brand umbrella, Verizon hopes to gain an advantage over cable operators like Comcast and Time Warner, who have partnered with America’s third biggest cell phone carrier, Sprint Nextel, to offer quadruple play services.

“A partnership is something that is harder to bring to market than the offering that we will have,” Strigl said of the cable/wireless consortium.
