U.S. Senate Votes to Make Do-Not-Call List Permanent

08/02/2008

In a blow to telemarketers, the United States Senate voted to approve the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act of 2007 this year, making it harder for salespeople to contact customers at their homes.

President George W. Bush says that he will sign the new legislation, which allows customers to permanently add their numbers with the national Do-Not-Call registry, and prevents the Federal Trade Commission from removing active phone numbers from the list, unless a customer asks to be taken off.

The new Act also maintains the FTC’s power to fine telemarketers who do not comply with the registry.

Approximately 150 million Americans have signed up for the Do-Not-Call registry since it was established in 2003.
