Qwest Mulls Home Security Services to Stem Fixed-Line Losses

10/03/2008

Qwest Communications is considering adding home security to its portfolio of services, offering technology like web-based video to let subscribers monitor their homes over the internet.

Such services would be offered with an ulterior motive in mind, of course, by require users to have a Qwest landline subscription, and discouraging so called cord cutters from dumping their traditional telephone service.

“We’re trying to figure out how to mitigate the loss of the wire-line phones,” commented Qwest CEO, Ed Mueller. “Until that decline stops, people should be skeptical. We’re skeptical. I’m just not willing to give up there.”

But even as landline customers continue to ride off into the sunset, Qwest is making a strong play to keep at least the broadband portion of its business going strong. The company is spending about $300 million this year alone to extend its fiber-optic broadband networks, boosting the speed of its home internet connections and encouraging customers to utilize online video applications.

“This is a valuable commodity at a pretty reasonable price,” Mueller said, referring to the increase in bandwidth.
