The Canadian province of Prince Edward Island has announced plans to extend high-speed internet access to each and every one of its communities, through an $8.2 million deal with local telephone carrier, Aliant.
The plan, which allows for renewal of the government’s contract with Aliant, was outlined this week by PEI’s Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development Minister, Allan Campbell.
“It is estimated that more than 25 percent of Islanders and rural businesses do not have access to high speed internet,” Campbell said. Under the terms of the new plan, however, dialup should no longer be necessary to access the internet in rural PEI.
