Shaw Communications Adds Big Ten Network and Golf Channel to HDTV Lineup

19/12/2008

Governments and cell phone carriers will warm to the idea of mobile gambling over the next three years, causing annual wagers via mobile phones to reach US$27.5 billion by 2013, Juniper Research predicted in a recent study. That compares to an estimated $192 million in wagers this year.

“Operators are demonstrably much more open to the idea of mobile gambling than they were even 12-18 months ago, both in terms of offering gambling services on-portal and accepting advertising from gambling companies,” explained report author, Dr. Windsor Holden.

In terms of government policy, the European Union has intervened to liberalize gambling laws in a number of member countries. In the United States, however, remote gambling remains illegal and will likely remain so until at least 2010.

Sports betting is expected to account for the majority wagers over the next few years, Juniper says. Mobile lotteries, however, which are already gaining popularity in Asia and Latin America, will likely reach the highest consumer adoption level, with 400 million players expected in 2013.
