Municipal Pension Fund Invests in Up-and-Coming Wireless Carrier, BMV

08/01/2009

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will introduce new regulations compelling mobile phone carriers to improve access to 911 emergency services, the regulator announced yesterday.

“We have made a decision that by February of 2010, Canadians will have access to enhanced 911 services,” said CRTC vice chairman, Len Katz, explaining that enhanced 911 makes it possible for emergency dispatchers to pinpoint a caller’s location.

More than 50% of Canadian 911 calls now come from cell phones, according to the CRTC’s report on the matter. U.S. wireless carriers have had enhanced 911 available on their networks since 2005.
