AT&T to Invest $18-Billion in Network Expansion

10/03/2009

America’s transition to all-digital TV broadcasting will free up plenty of airwaves for mobile television, creating an unprecedented opportunity for the budding technology, according to a new study by ABI Research.

Rather than piggybacking on cellular data networks, the mobile TV services of the future will be independent features in their own right, available on any mobile device with a built-in digital TV tuner.

“Mobile TV users have yet to value the medium properly because it has not been validated as an independent product and service,” explained ABI senior analyst, Jeff Orr. “It has been primarily offered at the end of a long list of more preferred cellular services. However, Mobile TV will soon be positioned in a more proper role as an extension of traditional broadcast TV services.”

Once this transition is complete, “mobile TV viewing will not solely be on cellular handsets, but also on [Mobile Internet Devices], and automotive infotainment systems,” Orr continued, predicting that “once the content is available and the services launched, mobile TV will enable more classes of mobile devices that are ‘natural fits’ for mobile entertainment.”
