The number of IPTV users in North America more than doubled last year, reaching a total of more than 3,835,000 at the end of December, according to new data from The Broadband Forum.
“During 2008, IPTV operators showed that TV over IP could be deployed on a large scale,” said Point Topic analyst, John Bonsell, who contributed to the research.
Western Europe remains the biggest market for internet-based television services, accounting for 10.4-million of the world’s 21.8-million IPTV subscribers. The global IPTV market grew by 63% over the course of 2008.
“This report shows that despite the economic situation the world is facing, the demand for both broadband and IPTV continues to expand,” commented Broadband Forum chairman and president, George Dobrowski.
