Western Canada’s leading telecom operator, Telus Corp., has signed a deal with its eastern counterpart, Bell Canada, to offer a new satellite TV service in British Columbia and Alberta.
By piggybacking on Bell’s existing satellite network, Telus hopes to complement its budding IPTV service and step up competition with Shaw Communications, its main cable TV rival. Beginning later this year, satellite TV will be offered alongside existing Telus offerings (broadband, telephone, etc.), and proceeds will be shared with Bell.
The Telus satellite service will come with 500 digital channels, including more than 70 in HD, as well as pay-per-view programming, time shifting features, and an interactive program guide.
