Dozens of University of Alberta professors are losing access to landline telephones, as a result of the institution’s latest round of budget cuts.

Foreign language and philosophy departments have already been affected, while English and film studies departments are next on the list, according to Chris Calhoun, assistant chair of the Edmonton university. A total of 60 faculty members will lose their office phones, while another 50 will lose access to shared phones.

Calhoun acknowledged that the change “is going to be really hard,” even despite the fact that most professors have cell phones. “We think we’ve moved on, but you know, the good old phone at the desk, it’s a really valuable tool from time to time. It’s going to be a big adjustment,” he said.

The University of Alberta has been forced to slash more than 60% of its non-salary budget this year.
